Don't Take the Bait!!

2 Corinthians 2:11 Lest satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

A device is a strategy or scheme to deceive and entrap an animal or human being. In this verse the Holy Spirit is warning us that satan is a deceiver who has plans to trap believers. Ignorant means you don't know something.

Hosea 4:6 says, "God's people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." So the answer to knowing what satan's traps are is knowledge of God's Word concerning your enemy (satan).

Luke 17:1 "...It is impossible but that offenses will come ..." Jesus warns us that we will all have opportunities to become offended at others in the course of our daily life. V2-4 tells us we don't want to be one that causes someone to become offended towards us and if someone wrongs us we need to be quick to forgive them and move on with life.

Proverbs 18:19 tells us that when a believer becomes offended (and chooses not to forgive) he is actually locking himself into spiritual/mental prison and it's very difficult to free him.

Far too many Christians live or I should say, "merely exist" in a self made prison trapped by their own unwillingness to yield to the love of God in their born again spirit.

Offense in these verses comes from the Greek Word skandalon. It refers to the trigger part of a trap to deceive and catch an unsuspecting animal. A trapper puts bait on the trigger and an unsuspecting animal goes for the bait and the jaws or door spring closed and that is end of the victim.

I've heard of a way that a remote tribe in Africa trapped monkeys (because they liked to eat monkeys). They would put a banana in a cage with the bars just close enough together that if the monkey put its hand in just right it could grab the banana. As soon as it did the natives would come running out with sticks and beat the monkey in the head until they killed it. All the monkey had to do was drop the banana (as long as it held the banana its hand was too wide to slip out of the bars) so it could run!

If believers hold on to grudges and offense and refuse to forgive the devil will continually beat them in every battle of life!
